The submissions portal for Covert Literary Magazine Issue 4 is now open!
Covert Literary Magazine is a publication by Writing Our Legacy showcasing global majority/BPOC creatives based in or with a connection to the South East England, established in 2020. For our fourth issue of Covert, we welcome Guest Editors Sean Wai Keung and Titilayo Farukuoye, who are both based in Glasgow, Scotland, and Elaine Chiew, who is based in the South East of England. Our Editorial Team includes Elaine Chiew, Zita Holbourne, Akila Richards, Tammye Huf and Amy Zamarripa Solis.
The submission deadline is Monday, 22nd April at 9 am.
Theme: Handmade/Made By Hand
We are thinking of all things food and craft — and more. For this issue we are accepting original fiction, creative non-fiction, hybrid forms, poetry and artwork. The homemade dumplings, chapatis, tortillas, stew, breads and chutneys. The artisan made guitars, drums and other musical instruments. Rugs, tapestry, beaded work, stained glass. Even nail art. What can you think of that is made by hand? How might your craft and writing practices cross-fertilise? How do these other creative practices open up personal, social, cultural, historical or intersectional insights? Here’s your chance to explore the self-taught and expert made from the diaspora and Global Majority communities.
Please note: you can only submit 3 pieces of prose and art work and up to 5 pages of poetry. Max word count for fiction, creative non-fiction and hybrid forms is 3000 words— in the interest of accessibility, where possible, please use size 14 font and 1.5 to double line-spacing. Please upload all text-based submissions as .doc and .docx files.
Successful contributors will be offered a fee of £35 per person (we currently do not have the resources to pay for multiple successful submissions, only per artist selected).
