More Information

Hay Castle is one of the great medieval defence structures on the border of England and Wales still standing. It was built in the late 12th century by the powerful Norman de Braose family, who conquered the region from the Welsh princes.

The castle has a turbulent history, being attacked and burnt several times by different factions during the wars of the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, a Jacobean mansion house was added to the castle, creating a contrast between the old and the new.

Today, Hay Castle is owned by Hay Castle Trust, a charity that has restored the property to form a centre for arts, literature and learning. You can explore the castle grounds, visit the exhibitions and events, or enjoy a cup of tea in the café.

Hay Castle is a place where history, culture and nature meet.
