Cardigan town and its castle date back to the twelfth century.
During the Medieval Ages, the town has been visited by wars, sieges, and power struggles between Welsh leaders and English kings all wanting to control this strategic location.
As ship-based trade became more popular, Cardigan rose on shipping’s importance to become a commercial centre. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Cardigan was the commercial centre of Cardiganshire and the most important port in South Wales.
From its iconic Castle to the bridge with footings dating back to the 1500s, Cardigan town has over 100 listed buildings. In a town with only 4,100 people - that’s a lot of historic buildings!
