The museum is located in South Mill Arts, a former malting and brewery complex that has been transformed into a vibrant arts and heritage centre. The museum is open from Monday to Saturday, and admission is free (donations are welcome).
The museum has a variety of displays and exhibits that explore the fascinating past of the town and its surroundings. You can discover the archaeological evidence of prehistoric, Roman and medieval settlements, the industrial heritage of malting and brewing, the social history of the town and its people, and the legacy of Cecil Rhodes, the controversial imperialist who was born in Bishop's Stortford.
The museum also offers a range of learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. You can join guided walks and talks, take part in holiday activities and workshops, or book a school visit. The museum also hosts community events and exhibitions that showcase local artists and groups. You can find out more about the museum's programme on their website or by contacting them.
The museum is a great place to spend a day with your family or friends, as you can also enjoy the other facilities of South Mill Arts. You can watch a theatre performance, listen to live music, see a comedy show or join a dance class. You can also relax in the Maltings Bar, which serves hot and cold drinks, snacks and cakes. The bar is themed to celebrate the town's industrial heritage, and you can see some of the original malting equipment on display.
