More Information

Auchindrain Historic Township is a special and unique place in Scotland. Centuries ago, there were thousands of farming communities known as townships. From the mid 1700s, people were evicted or encouraged to move by the landowners to make the land more profitable. This process is known as the Highland Clearances. Most townships disappeared or fell into a state of disrepair, but Auchindrain survived and still stands much as it did in the late 18th century. It is truly a window into Scotland’s past. With the assistant of a tablet-guide you can walk around the land and visit the houses and barns for an authentic taste of Scottish history. An interactive tour is available at auchindrain.org.uk. The visitor centre offers a variety of hot and cold drinks, snacks, and shop. The museum is located six miles south of the picturesque town of Inveraray, 1hr drive from, Oban and 90 minutes from Glasgow. The 926 bus from Glasgow to Campbeltown stops at the township.
