More Information

As you wander through this charming ornamental cottage, take note of the subtle hints that reveal its connection to royalty. One intriguing clue lies within the Print Room, adorned with two Hogarth sequences titled The Harlot’s Progress and The Rake’s Progress. These moralizing tales, likely intended for young women, depict the moral decline from innocence to corruption.

In the Picnic Room, attention is drawn to the trellis, believed to have been decorated by Princess Elizabeth, daughter of George and Charlotte. Her artistic talents possibly embellished the space for a tea party meant for her father, which sadly never took place. Nevertheless, the trellis serves as a poignant reminder of the cottage's past as a place of familial joy.

Additionally, signs of the diligent workers who served 'below stairs' are evident throughout. Service bells once used by the royal family to summon tea and a modest kitchen with a traditional hearth reflect the efforts of those who ensured the comfort and satisfaction of the King and Queen during their time here. These glimpses into the cottage's history offer a deeper appreciation for the intimate yet bustling space it once was.
