More Information

Dover Castle is a medieval castle in Dover, Kent, England, that has been described as the "Key to England" due to its defensive significance throughout history. It was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror and has witnessed many important events, such as the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 and the secret operation of an underground hospital during World War II.

At Dover Castle, you can explore the secret wartime tunnels beneath the castle, where state-of-the-art special effects and real film footage bring to life the dramatic rescue of the British Army from the beaches of Dunkirk. You can also step inside the Great Tower and immerse yourself in a medieval palace like no other, where you can meet costumed characters and experience the vibrant colour and rich furnishings of one of medieval England's most important castles. You can also climb to the roof of the tower for amazing views of the English Channel and the surrounding countryside.

Dover Castle is not only a medieval fortress, but also a Roman and Saxon site. You can discover the oldest surviving lighthouse in the country, and one of the oldest in the world, the Roman Pharos, which was once used to aid navigation by Romans across the English Channel from France. Next to the lighthouse is the Anglo-Saxon church of St Mary in Castro, a working church still in use today.

You can also enjoy a bite to eat at one of the cafés or kiosks on site, or bring your own picnic and relax in the 80 acres of castle grounds. If you are feeling adventurous, you can also try your hand at The Bunker, Dover Castle's very own escape room, where you have to solve puzzles and crack codes in a race against the clock.

Dover Castle is a great destination for anyone who loves history, adventure and fun. Don't miss this opportunity to visit England's greatest fortress and have a memorable day out.
