More Information

Chawton House was owned by Jane Austen’s brother Edward, and described as ‘the Great House’. Jane lived in a cottage on his estate and would stroll up to 'dawdle away' many an hour in the grand Elizabethan manor and its picturesque gardens.

Visitors to the House today can discover Chawton House's four hundred year history, see Austen heirlooms such as the dining table at which Jane would have enjoyed family meals, and explore Chawton House's unique collection of early women's writing. From novelists and travel writers to philosophers and activists, the Library holds manuscripts, rare and early editions, and for some works, the only known surviving copy.

The Gardens have been restored to the English Landscape style popular in the late 18th century and feature a Lime Avenue, Walled Garden, and Wilderness that visitors can explore. The Gardens are dog friendly, with wider parkland walks available for those looking for a longer stroll.

The Old Kitchen Tearoom serves tea, coffee, light lunches and cakes
