Castell Coch, or the Red Castle, is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. It is one of the most picturesque and romantic castles in the country, with its three conical towers and red sandstone walls. The castle is open to the public and managed by Cadw, the Welsh heritage agency.
The castle was originally built by the Normans in the 11th century, but it was destroyed and abandoned in the 14th century. It was later restored and transformed by the architect William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, a wealthy and eccentric nobleman who had a passion for medieval art and history. Burges created a fantasy castle, full of elaborate decorations and symbolism, inspired by legends and literature. The castle has many rooms to explore, such as the Drawing Room, the Banqueting Hall, the Lady's Bedroom, and the Nursery. Each room has its own theme and style, with exquisite paintings, carvings, furniture, and stained glass windows.
Visiting Castell Coch is like stepping into a fairy tale, and you can learn more about its fascinating history and design from the audio guide and exhibition. The castle is also surrounded by beautiful beech woods, and you can enjoy some lovely walks in the area. Castell Coch is a must-see attraction for anyone who loves castles, history, and art.
