Waterfalls
Escape the crowds and experience the highest waterfall in Dartmoor National Park. The climb to Lady Exmouth’s falls takes you on a journey through Canonteign’s past where natural waterfalls have existed for generations. From the site of the old sawmill you’ll pass the smaller Clampitt Falls, before emerging from ancient woodland to your first sight of the main waterfall and continuing your adventure through the Secret Garden and up 90 Victorian steps. Lady Exmouth falls was created over 100 years ago by redirecting part of the stream over a rocky outcrop, creating the dramatic spectacle you’ll find today.Fern Garden
The Victorian Fern Garden was awarded Plant Heritage National Collection status in 2022 and is an historic snapshot of the 19th Century craze for ferns and fairies. Only discovered by chance in 2009, you’ll find this hidden gem on your route to the top of the waterfall. Climb up through ancient bluebell woodlands via the original Victorian steps and emerge into a magical fern-lined hanging valley with its twisting paths and prehistoric looking ferns. Carry on to view the Falls themselves and see the panorama of the Devon countryside at your feet.
Playgrounds and family fun
Canonteign gives children the opportunity to discover nature at its best and parents a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Explore the adventure playgrounds, complete with trampolines, wooden galleon, zip wire and mini assault course. Children adore the challenge of the steps up to the Falls, spotting our resident fairies and willow animals, including Terence the T-Rex, along the way.
Canonteign Kitchen
Serving homemade food which champions local produce. Discover our seasonal lunches, homemade cakes, Devon cream teas, Barista coffee, and special children’s menu. There is a pretty indoor cafe with table seating and a sofa area around a roaring fire in winter, as well as plenty of outside space for taking in the fresh air, basking in the sun and enjoying the view of the Lily and Swan Lakes. Choose from our sun terrace, courtyard or pick a picnic spot around the grounds.
During weekends and school holidays, our Snack Bar makes light bites, hot drinks and ice creams available outside too.
Do remember that entry to the Kitchen and shop is free, and dogs are welcome inside and out.
